SOUTH ASIAN WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT AND RESOURCE ALLIANCE (SAWERA)

The South Asian Women’s Empowerment & Resource Alliance (SAWERA) was established to support South Asian women and families affected by domestic violence and abuse. Based in Oregon, the organization developed culturally responsive services designed to address some of the unique barriers that immigrant and South Asian survivors may encounter when seeking help.
These barriers can include concerns about family and community expectations, language, immigration status, financial dependence, social isolation, and fear of stigma. Organizations such as SAWERA recognize that effective support must consider not only an individual’s immediate safety, but also the cultural and social circumstances surrounding that person and family.

SUPPORT FOR SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

SAWERA has provided support and referrals for South Asian women experiencing domestic violence. Services associated with the organization have included assistance connecting survivors with resources such as shelter, legal services, counseling, employment assistance, child care, and other community supports.

Culturally responsive advocacy can be particularly important when survivors face language barriers, unfamiliarity with available services, immigration concerns, or pressure from family and community networks.

The goal is to help individuals obtain information, understand available options, and make decisions regarding safety and support.

ADVOCACY, EMPOWERMENT, AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION

In addition to helping individual survivors, SAWERA has focused on education and outreach within South Asian communities.

Community education can help increase awareness of domestic violence, reduce stigma surrounding abuse, and make it easier for individuals and families to recognize when professional or community assistance may be needed.

This combination of individual support and broader community education reflects an important principle in domestic-violence prevention: survivors need access to practical resources, while communities also benefit from increased awareness and open discussion about safety, healthy relationships, and available support.

CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE SUPPORT

Culture, immigration experiences, family relationships, religion, language, and community expectations can influence how an individual experiences and responds to domestic violence.

For some immigrant survivors, leaving or seeking assistance may involve concerns extending beyond the abusive relationship itself, including housing, finances, children, immigration status, extended-family relationships, and fear of losing community support.

Culturally responsive organizations can help survivors navigate these overlapping concerns while respecting their individual circumstances, values, and decisions.

SAWERA AS A COMMUNITY RESOURCE

I include information about SAWERA on this website as a community resource and as an example of an organization created to address domestic violence within a culturally specific population.

Domestic violence can affect individuals and families from every cultural, ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic background. Access to culturally informed advocacy and community resources can make it easier for survivors to seek assistance and understand the options available to them.
